Memorial Day, the annual holiday that comes the 4th Monday in May got its start about 150 years ago as a way to remember the men and women who served and died during the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day; as time went on, the holiday now remembers all of our veterans who served and died.
Memorial Day in Wausau is celebrated with a parade on Saturday of the holiday weekend, starting at 10:45am at Marathon Park and ending at the VFW on River Dr. A short ceremony follows the parade. On the holiday itself another ceremony is held at Restlawn Cemetery at 11:00am with a cookout lunch to follow.
I hope everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend, wether you are staying at home or traveling during the long weekend. However your holiday plans lead you, please take a moment and remember the sacrifices our veterans made in the name of freedom.
