The 37th annual Birds in Art exhibition opens this Saturday September 8th at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. This perennial favorite of the Wausau Area, and internationally renown exhibit features pieces from 125 artists.
According to the Woodson Art Museum:
Artwork from 125 artists has been selected for the 2012 exhibition, including work by seven Wisconsin artists, thirty-three international artists, nineteen first-time Birds in Art artists, and nineteen artists who have been named Master Artists during previous Birds in Art exhibitions. The exhibition presents original paintings, sculptures, and graphics created within the last two years by artists from the world over, once again celebrates the timeless appeal of birds through fresh artistic interpretations.
This year’s exhibition has a great selection featuring a both a fresh, contemporary look a birds along with classical interpretations of birding art. These pieces aren’t specimens that you will find in the Audubon guide, but instead are artistic interpretations and expressions of birds, their environment, and role in man. A favorite of mine is Karen Bondarchuk‘s, My name is Hubert and I am not an owl. A charcoal and fingerprinted ink on Hahnemuele paper. The owl, captured while young and now living in a bird sanctuary imprinted on humans at an early point of its life. The Screen Owl, while still possessing the qualities of a Screech Owl, doesn’t believe or act like an owl.
The 37th Annual Birds in Art exhibition runs from September 8th – November 11, 2012
Also opening this weekend is the Woodson Art Museum’s new gallery space featuring a year long exhibition of their recent acquisition of several Owen Gromme works. Gromme, a prolific artist from Wisconsin and friend of the Museum was commissioned in 1965 by M&I Bank in Milwaukee to produce artwork for their corporate headquarters. These artworks were endowed to the Museum by BMO Harris Bank in 2011. Gromme was instrumental in launching the Museum’s annual Birds in Art back in the early 1970’s, so it’s only fitting for one of the largest Owen Gromme collections to have their permament home at the Woodson Art Museum.
The Woodson Art Museum, located in Wausau, WI is open Tuesday – Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday and Sunday Noon – 5:00pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The Museum will offer extended hours from 9:00am – 5:00pm during Artrageous weekend September 8-9, 2012.
