Wausau Community Theatre launches their musical production of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” this weekend, November 8-11, 2012. Most people are probably familiar with the 1982 film version starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton; but The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas ran on Broadway for 1,500 shows starting in 1978 and had enough momentum to launch the movie adaptation.
From the Wausau Community Theatre website:
Based on a story that was inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch, an illegal but tolerated brothel outside of La Grange, Texas, THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is most often recognized for the 1982 Oscar and Golden Globe nominated comedy starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. Filled with music that is a blend of country, pop and gospel, an abundance of colorful characters, and terrific dance numbers – a good ole’ hoe-down will be had by all.
The brothel, although illegal, is allowed to exist in a small Texas town with a wink and a nod for over 150 years. But when a big city television personality launches a crusade against it; the ramifications ripple all the way up to the statehouse in Austin. The show is an enjoyable romp through propriety, hypocrisy, and politics and has plenty of catchy tunes that you’ll be humming afterwards. But it’s also filled with contemporary themes and dialogue, and is certainly not a children’s show.
