Baked beans, the perfect side dish for brats, burgers, or hot dogs on the grill. Do you want something a little tastier than opening a can of beans from the grocery store? Although I often do love the sugary sweet taste of commercial baked beans, there is really nothing better than the tomatoey taste of homemade baked beans; and these certainly deliver that taste. Full of tomato, bacon and sweet brown sugar, my baked beans are easy, and nothing liked you’ve ever tasted before.
Brown Sugar and Bacon Baked Beans
- 1 15oz can of crushed tomatoes in thick puree (I used diced tomatoes and pureed them in the food processor)
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp cider vinegar
- 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Dash hot sauce
- 2 15oz can Great Northern beans, drained
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 6 slices bacon (6 oz) diced lengthwise
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stir together tomatoes, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, worcestershire, hot sauce, in a large bowl. Gently stir in beans.
Saute bacon until fat is rendered. Remove bacon onto paper towel, reserving grease. Saute onion in bacon grease until translucent about five minutes. Remove from grease onto paper towel. Add to ben mixture.
Pour mixture into 2 quart baking dish. Cook until bubbling and beans absorb liquid, about 1 1/2 hours. Serve hot or cold.
