Golfers are still on the course, lawns are green and growing, and gardens are producing. Traditionally Indian Summer is supposed to be the stretch of warm days that happen after a cold, killing frost. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen a hard frost yet. It does look like our cooldown may happen next week, though. Enjoy the warmth while you can.

Jay’s Auto Repair
Quick gas-saving tip: Improving a low mpg number saves a lot more gas (and money) than improving a high mpg number – although most of us think the opposite is true. So moving from a 33 mpg compact car into a 50 mpg hybrid will only save you about 1 gallon every 100 miles. But if you can increase the miles-per-gallon on your old truck from 10 mpg to 20 mpg (which is very doable with proper maintenance and better driving habits) you’ll save 10 gallons every 100 miles. We’re no math wizards but we like the 2nd one better! Make sure your vehicle is in peak fuel saving condition. Stop in at Jay’s Auto today.

Based on the life and poems of Emily Dickinson, The Belle of Amherst is an inspiring portrait of a famous and eccentric spinster who is one of America’s greatest literary figures (1,775 poems). One actor creates an entertaining and anecdotal revelation of Dickinson’s life and art. With a wicked sense of humor, Emily tweaks Victorian pretensions, performs deadpan impressions of the people around her and mocks her own idiosyncrasies. Experience this passionate and mysterious poet who, though reclusive, had an intoxicating exuberance for life.More at the River District Theatre. . .

October is the spooky time of year. With the days getting progressively shorter and the wind whipping through the dried leaves and rustling branches; it can be downright scary walking in the late evening. Two events coming up to thrill and chill you include: At Rest, the history of funeral customs can be found at the Marathon County Historical Society, and the Merrill Haunted Sawmill opens up. The sawmill is plenty scary and since it’s run by Boy Scout Troop 599 in Merrill, you know it will benefit the community.
