This summer there certainly hasn’t been a lack of things to do in the Wausau area, and with the approach of Wausau’s Big Weekend, the list of things to do jumps into overdrive. Typically the weekend after the the 4th of July: Wausau’s Big Weekend is actually five full days of fun that runs from Wednesday July 9th to Sunday July 13, 2014. Ready for action? Hang on tight because here’s the rundown:

Concerts on Square: Wednesday, July 9th at 6:00pm

While not officially a Wausau’s Big Weekend Event, the weekly summer concerts on the 400 block is a great way to kick off the period of the fun and activity for the extended weekend. This Wednesday you’ll hear the shakin’ and swinging’ bluesy rock of Johnny and the Mo-Tones, local favorite John Altenburgh’s band featuring Chris O’Keefe, Mitch Viegut, John Griener, and more. Once they start playing their high energy sound, you’ll think you were instantly transported to Memphis, Tennessee. What a great way to start things off.

Wausau River District Sidewalk Sale, July 10 – 13

Catch the Sidewalk Sale and Thursday’s Marketplace around the 400 block and all downtown

Downtown retailers pull the racks out into the sidewalk for special deals and sales like you’ve never seen. It’s the annual Wausau River District Sidewalk Sale. Park your car or ride your bike downtown (plenty of bike parking with the new racks) and scoop up some deals. Hours vary, but most shops open by 9am for the sale. Don’t forget to check out the businesses on the near west side of downtown located on 1st – 3rd Avenues.

Wausau Balloon Rally and Ribfest, July 10 – 13

Wausau-Balloon-Rally-and-GlowSlightly off from the downtown area is the Wausau Event’s annual Balloon Rally and Ribfest. Located at the Wausau Municipal Airport, both events run all weekend with a variety of activities including airplane rides, rib cookoffs, live music, fireworks (Friday & Saturday night), and several balloon launches and glows (weather permitting). Admission is free, but no carry-ins are allowed. A free shuttle bus will run between the downtown events and the airport throughout the weekend.

Thursday July 10: Rib Fest, Balloon Launch at 6:30pm and glow afterwards
Friday July 11: Rib Fest, Balloon Launch at 6:30pm and glow, fireworks, and live music
Saturday July 12: Balloon Launch at 6:00am and 6:30pm. Pancake breakfast, Rib Fest, live much throughout the day. Fireworks
Sunday July 13: Balloon Launch 6:30am. Pancake breakfast

Chalkfest, July 12 – 13

Wausau-Downtown-ChalkfestHundreds of artists descend onto the 400 block the weekend of the 12th and 13th for the annual Chalkfest. Watch all weekend as these talented individuals and teams use chalk to decorate their section of sidewalk. Want to try your hand at chalk art? Blocks are still available, but registration forms must be in by Wednesday, July 9th. Contact the Center for Visual Arts for details.

Farmers Markets, July 9, 10, 12

Check out the Wausau Farmer’s Market on Wednesday & Saturday July 9 & 12 on River Drive in Wausau, the Weston Farmer’s Market on Thursday & Saturday July 10 & 12 on Schofield Ave next the Weston Municipal Center, and the Downtown Market on Thursday July 10 starting at 10am on the 400 Block.

These activities are only scratching the surface of what’s going on with Wausau’s Big Weekend. Don’t forget to check out the events at the area museums and evening entertainment at local bars. The weather promises to be good, so stay in town this weekend and have some fun.
