Garden-flowersEvery year Beloit College releases their Mindset List, a compilation of items that incoming college freshmen most likely have not experienced in their lifetime. This list was first created as a way for college professors to be able to better relate to the new students, but in its own life has become an indicator of how fleeting our own cultural mindset is. My daughter is starting college next week, so reviewing this year’s list is a stark reminder of how much the world has changed in the last 18 years physically, culturally, and technologically. That point was driven home when my wife looked at the small pile stuff she had packed and mentioned: “I remember bringing a lot more stuff with me to school- where’s the television, boxes of cassettes and stereo?” My daughter promptly replied, “It’s all on my phone and computer.”

According to the Mindset List, the younger generation is more and more wedded to technology. They’re more apt to seek out online reviews and information before before they step foot into your store or restaurant. How is your online profile? Is your website up to date, review sites accurate and favorable, and social media active? Birds inspire awe in endless ways, through their mesmerizing flight, astounding beauty, and delightful eccentricities. They serve as harbingers of seasonal and environmental changes, dazzle with their colors, and soothe with their songs. With talented artists from throughout the world striving to be among those chosen for the internationally renowned Birds in Art exhibition, the resulting depictions are breathtaking. The 39th annual exhibition celebrates avian marvels through fresh interpretations in original paintings, sculptures, and graphics created within the last three years.

The 2014 Birds in Art exhibition features 15 works by 2014 Master Artist Barry Van Dusen, whose luminous watercolors that blend impressionism and realism begin in the field with direct observation and field sketching. The Princeton, Massachusetts artists’ work has been selected for inclusion in Birds in Art fourteen times since 1991, his first year in the exhibition. Van Dusen is the museum’s 34th Master Artist to receive the museum’s Master Wildlife Artist Medal.

The 39th Annual Birds in Art Exhibition opens to the general public on Saturday September 6th at 10:00am. See it at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau.
