Make a Difference Day is the largest single nationwide day of community service. On the fourth Saturday in October,
millions of Americans unite to do good for others on Make A Difference Day. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, this nationwide effort is made up of everyday people whose contributions improve communities and better lives.

Locally there are several Make A Difference Day Events scheduled for the Wausau. Volunteering a few hours of your time on a Saturday morning will go a long way towards fulfilling the goal of the event.

United Way Volunteer Connection co-ordinates a community wide Rake-a-thon for Make a Difference Day on October 25  and has more requests than volunteers.  More than 100 elderly or disabled residents are still looking for help with raking and bagging leaves.  Can you help?  Grab a friend or two (or 10) and spend a few hours raking leaves on Make a Difference Day.  Busy on October 25?  Rake any time between October 20 and November 2.  It’s simple to sign up, just call United Way’s 2-1-1 between 8-5, Monday through Friday, or sign up on-line. Do you know of an elderly or disabled resident that needs their leaves raked? Call the United Way’s 2-1-1 to have their name added to the list.

Wausau Noon Kiwanis Coats for Kids project is collecting gently used winter outerwear in both kids and adult sizes for Make a Difference Day. Drop off your donation of winter clothing Saturday, October 25th at the Wausau National Guard Armory (corner of 17th Ave & Sherman St) for collection and sorting.

The Marathon County Hunger Coalition is conducting a food drive for Fill A Food Pantry. Non-perishable food items should be brought to the National Guard Armory on October 25th. In addition to food items, the The Workplace Volunteer Council is conducting a toiletries Drive. Personal care items for men, women and children donated the the  Back to Basics project.

More information on the Marathon County United Way’s Make a Difference Day efforts can be found on their website.

Marathon County Public Library will partner with the Wausau Daily Herald and The Gannett Foundation for Make a Difference Day on October 25, starting at 10:00 a.m. at two MCPL locations: the Wausau Headquarters and the Rothschild Branch. Wausau Daily Herald employees will read to children and free books will be distributed to children ages six and under. This activity is free and open to the public.
